Bottles of Confidence

“Consider the fact that maybe…just maybe…beauty and worth aren’t found in a makeup bottle, or a salon-fresh hairstyle, or a fabulous outfit. Maybe our sparkle comes from somewhere deeper inside, somewhere so pure and authentic and REAL, it doesn’t need gloss or polish or glitter to shine.”
― Mandy Hale

While Miss Hale may be right, and our “sparkle” may come from within, it’s questionable whether we need gloss or polish or glitter to shine.

There’s just something about a new outfit, a new haircut, and oh yes, brand-new makeup.

One of the easiest things to buy, especially if someone is new to makeup, is nail polish. The array of colors and types and brands is practically endless; just when you think you’ve seen them all and know them all, a new one is being formulated, packaged and displayed at your local drugstore and department store.

There is one place, however, that can easily be called the Mecca of nail polish enthusiasts.. enthusiasts, lovers, addicts, junkies.. same diff.

This Mecca is a nail supply house. A nail supply house is a store that houses all kinds of nail polish including accessories, gadgets, tools, etc. some of which are no longer in retail stores but are still available at the supply house. And, get this, at the supply house, it’s wholesale price therefore much cheaper than at retail stores. You can hear the “oooh”s and “ahhh”s and “Oh my god, they have this here?” of the girls who walk in for the first time. Then there are the veterans who walk around scoping out what’s new, what they’ve been eyeing since the first time they came to the supply house but is too expensive for their budget so they hope and pray it’ll go on sale (guilty!), and who walk around just staring at all the pretty bottles of nail polish as if just being around them is enough.

Today the best friend and I took a drive down to our “local” supply house and relished in all the nail polish finds. There’s just something about it.. a kind of girly excitement that only new makeup can emulate.

So while our “sparkle” does come from within.. a new nail polish shade is just what a girl needs to let that sparkle shine. A nail color may describe a lot about a girl. Frequent french manicure or just a clear coat may mean that the girl is a minimalist, likes clean lines and clean bedrooms. It may also mean that she’s a nursing student and isn’t allowed to paint her nails for clinicals. A girl who’s been wearing the same shade of red for the past few years may be a girl who’s afraid of change; a girl who’s afraid to live outside her comfort zone. A girl who knows the word Pantone and only buys OPI, Essie, and Zoya may be a fashionista, a girl who likes to keep up with the trends.

So a girl’s trip to the nail supply house isn’t just one of vanity and overspending. It’s a trip to the place where we choose the colors with which we want to show the world our “sparkle”. 😉
